H.S. Football Ratings: Xavier, Hand Remain 1 & 2; No Losses Among State, Area Top 10s…

Xavier-Middletown remained No. 1 in The Courant state and area high school football ratings after its 44-0 win over Notre Dame-West Haven, in which Tim Boyle had 269 combined passing and rushing yards. Hand-Madison, a 35-13 winner over Amity-Woodbridge, retained its No. 2 position in both ratings.


1. XAVIER-MIDDLETOWN (1-0): Amassed 568 yards in total offense against Notre Dame-West Haven. Last week: 1. This week: North Haven at Palmer Field, Middletown on Friday.

2. HAND-MADISON (1-0): Brendan Bilcheck ran for two touchdowns and threw two TD passes to Caleb Ewald against Amity. LW: 2. TW: Hillhouse-New Haven at Bowen Field, New Haven on Friday.

3. STAPLES-WESTPORT (1-0): Scored 42 points in the second half to beat St. Joseph-Trumbull, 49-28. LW: 3. TW: Bridgeport Central on Friday.

4. ANSONIA (1-0): Ran over Torrington, 66-26, as Arkeel Newsome rushed for 197 yards and five TDs in the first half. LW: 4. TW: Woodland on Friday.

5. WINDSOR (1-0): Handled Wethersfield 42-0, as Jaylen Berry ran for 131 yards and two TDs on three carries and Quinn Fleeting passed for 230 yards and ran for 125. LW: 5. TW: Bristol Central on Friday.

6. GREENWICH (1-0): Triumphed over Ridgefield 20-7, as quarterback Jose Melo, in relief of Liam O’Neil (broken finger), passed for 246 yards and one TD. LW: 6. TW: Bassick at Kennedy Stadium, Bridgeport on Friday.

7. LEDYARD (1-0): JoJo Shumaker had 264 rushing yards and four scores in 35-0 victory over Waterford 35-0. LW: 7. TW: at Killingly on Thursday.

8. HOLY CROSS-WATERBURY (1-0): Scored on its first six possessions and breezed past Crosby-Waterbury 55-6. LW: 8. TW: at Watertown on Friday.

9. BERLIN (1-0): Defeated East Catholic-Manchester 49-6, as Mitch Williams completed 16 of 18 passes for 320 yards and six TDs. LW: 9. TW: Rocky Hill on Friday.

10. HILLHOUSE-NEW HAVEN (1-0): Totaled 327 yards on the ground in 55-34 win at Foran-Milford. LW: 9. TW: Hand at Bowen Field on Friday.

6. FARMINGTON (1-0): Ran for 202 yards in 28-6 victory over E.O. Smith-Storrs. LW: 6. TW: Maloney-Meriden at Falcon Field, Meriden on Friday.

7. CONARD-WEST HARTFORD (1-0): The Chieftains’ ground game was powerful in 43-0 triumph over South Windsor. LW: 8. TW: Simsbury on Saturday.

8. HARTFORD PUBLIC (1-0): Jordan Spruielle’s 38-yard TD interception return and Shiquan Mangual’s 83 rushing yards and one TD led the Owls past Maloney 21-13. LW: 7. TW: at RHAM-Hebron on Saturday.

9. CROMWELL (1-0): Experienced few problems in defeating East Hampton/Vinal Tech 51-14 behind Derrick Villard’s 241 rushing yards and three TDs. LW: 9. TW: Lewis Mills-Burlington on Saturday.

10. COVENTRY/WINDHAM TECH/BOLTON (1-0): Tommy Meyers had seven receptions for 132 yards and three TDs to help the Patriots beat Gilbert-Winsted/Northwestern Regional-Winsted 34-21. TW: at Avon on Saturday.
